Summary
The authors show that the rate of proliferation of human fallopian tube epithelium is different in the various phases of the menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, post partum and in the post menopausal period. Tritium-thymidine labelling was used to demonstrate the rate of cell division in vitro. In the women with regular menstruation the tritium-thymidine index reached a maximum of 3.5% between the 9th and 12th days of the menstrual cycle. Following ovulation there was a fall in the rate of cell division and after the 16–18th day the rate was the same as during the phases of desquamation, pregnancy and post partum (0.3–0.85%). No cell division was found in the post menopausal period.
The authors conclude that during the normal menstrual cycle cell division in human fallopian tube epithelium is greatest when oestrogen activity is at a maximum. Parallels are found with the results of investigation of the endometrium uteri, which have also shown that cell proliferation varies during the different phases of the cycles.
