Summary
Thin-section and freeze-fracture techniques have been employed to investigate the ultrastructure of PCB-intoxicated rat liver of different ages. Besides alterations in the supramolecular structure of the plasma membranes, excessive proliferation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) in the hepatocytes was observed. In young rats, the surface density increased by up to 803% (P<0.001) and in old rats up to 282% (P<0.001) compared with the control rats. All other investigated parameters decreased significantly after the application of PCB.
