Summary
In the postoperative phase the laboratory supports the doctor in monitoring (and perhaps influencing) the vital functions, the postoperative therapy, the specific functions which may be affected by the basic condition or the operation performed, the prevention of complications, and finally the patient's rehabilitation. The necessary information is obtained from physical, physicochemical, hematological, hemostasiological, and clinicochemical tests. The main value of clinicochemical tests lies in the insight they allow into the state of specific functions. Estimation of blood cholesterol has proved to have surprising prognostic value in the assessment of rehabilitation.
