Summary
Necrobiosis of the rat testis experimentally induced by one subcutaneous injection of cadmium chloride is associated with early changes of enzyme activities some hours before histological damage becomes apparent. It was previously believed the cadmium primarily attacked the interstitial vessels and secondarily damaged the germinal epithelium. The enzyme studies presented, however, strongly suggest the cadmium ion acts directly as a toxin on the germinal epithelium, too.
