Summary
Tumor cells of a diploid Ehrlich ascites tumor and a hypodiploid MCa 1 ascites tumor were counted at different times after inoculation, and growth curves established.
In the Ehrlich ascites tumor the cell increase started immediately after inoculation, whereas MCa 1 ascites tumor showed no measurable cell increase during the first three days (“latency period”). An exponential growth was demonstrable in Ehrlich ascites tumor from the first to the 5th day, in the MCa 1 ascites tumor from the 3rd to the 6th day after inoculation. There after it became a non-exponential growth, and the growth curve flattened. At this time an infiltration into the abdominal tissues was found in both ascites tumors. Only during the exponential phase may the mode of growth be followed.
The different behaviour of the two tumors, similar in origin and morphology, is taken for a symptom of individuality of tumor cell lines.
