Summary
Secondary sex characteristics and correlated physiological parameters as influenced by various experimental photoperiods in fallow deer (Dama dama L.) were studied, as were their resynchronization ability. The purpose of the investigation was to contribute to the knowledge concerning the individual phases in the antler cycle of cervidae as influenced by yearly periodic phenomena. The physiological — endocrinological basis was to be selectively considered. For the first time a collective of large adult mammals were subjected without interruption to several years of various experimentally accelerated photoperiods within an artificial environment. Subsequently they were resynchronized under natural conditions. Under all experimental conditions the antler cycle responded as under normal conditions and demonstrated a yearly periodic development. Under resynchronization the individual phases of the antler cycle readapted to the natural photoperiods. The antler cycle can be considered as having a possible yearly endogenous rhythm, whereby the manipulation of the endocrinological parameters causing seasonal changes in the secondary sex characteristics can cover a wide area.
