Summary
An amyloid tumour of the Gasserian ganglion is described, which provides the third such case in the world literature.
The clinical picture of these cases is manifested by pain and disturbances of sensation in the trigeminal territory, in addition the pain is not characteristic of that of true trigeminal neuralgia.
Histologically there is a diffuse infiltration of the Gasserian ganglion by a material which stains with Congo-red in a manner typical of amyloid. In none of the cases was there any indication of generalised amyloid disease. It was also found, as far as could be shown, that there was no certain evidence of local amyloid deposits in any other places in the body.
In the discussion, amyloid deposits in the central nervous system in generalised amyloidosis and in localised amyloid infiltrations are gone into, with special reference to late radiation damage to the brain, The previously accepted theories on the pathogenesis of the amyloid development and deposition are discussed. However, the pathogenesis of isolated amyloid infiltration of the Gasserian ganglion is still unclear.
