Summary
Dielectric behaviours of some cyclic compounds were studied at frequencies between 300 Hz and 30 kHz over a temperature range from −70°C to room temperature in connection with the investigation of the effects of sizes and chemical structure of the ring units involved in polymer matrix, and revealed; (1) β-propiolactone and γ-lactones did not show any dielectric loss maximum peak, while δ-n-heptyl-δ-valerolactone showed one reflecting the more mobile character of the ring, (2) among μ-tetradecalactone, ξ-pentadecalactone and o-hexadecalactone, ξ-pentadecalactone is the most stable judging from the highest melting point and X-ray diffraction patterns taken at various temperatures together with the result of dielectric behaviours and (3) the energy of interconversion of δ-n-heptyl-δ-valerolactone, cyclododecanone, ξ-pentadecanone and tridecamethylene cyclic tridecanoate is found to be 20, 10, 8.0 and 6.6 kcal/mole respectively reflecting the mobility of the respective ring.
