Abstract
THE cultivated oat Avena sativa (2n = 42) normally forms 21 bivalents at meiosis, but on rare occasions a bivalent fails due either to asynapsis or desynapsis. The irregular transmission of the resulting univalents may lead to the formation of gametes deficient for a chromosome, or with an extra chromosome. If such aneuploid gametes are fertilized by euploid gametes, monosomic or trisomic offspring will arise.
