Abstract
CURRENT discussions as to the part which science should play in industry are often vitiated by misconceptions as to what science and the scientific activity really are. Sciencé is not the mere use of scientific apparatus to ascertain facts, nor the use of scientific jargon to describe them. Again, we should not use the term science to include the testing of materials and the control of technical processes as practised in modern industry. All this should be regarded as part of engineering and production technique, which only incidentally requires particular kinds of apparatus and men with a particular training. Science is not primarily a matter of technique but a specific activity of the human mind.
