Abstract
THE Cro protein specified by bacteriophage lambda is a repressor of the genes expressed early in phage development; this temporal regulation is required for a normal late stage of lytic growth (see refs 1–5). Cro protein has been purified and shown to bind to the operator regions, OL and OR6,7, used by the cI repressor protein to maintain lysogeny8; purified Cro also represses RNA synthesis initiated at the early promoter sites on λ DNA7. Among the features that make Cro interesting for further biochemical study are its timed physiological action1–5 and apparent role in regulation of DNA replication9. Cro is also convenient for structural analysis because of its extremely small size6,7. Here we report the amino acid sequence of Cro protein.
