Abstract
THE early results on the antibacterial activity of transition metal ions and their complexes have been summarized by Schulman and Dwyer1. They found that iron(II) and ruthenium (II) phenanthroline complexes have some bacteriostatic activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Recently, interesting effects on the bacteriological growth of Escherichia coli in the presence of platinum(IV) salts have been found2. At low concentrations, the ion [PtCl6]2− was found to be a bacteriocide whereas cis-[PtCl4(NH3)2] was found to inhibit cell division and produce filamentous growth.
