Summary
A generator of strictly normal stress time variations was designed in order to study the membrane resistance to mechanical stress of various cell species. This system provides pressure drops within very short time periods: 22 MPa in 1.9 msec in liquid systems and 6 MPa in 10 msec in the presence of a gas. It also offers the possibility to study the effect of successive “compression / decompression” cycles on cell integrity and metabolism. A single decompression provoked no structural damage to the cells.
