A geometrical optics treatment of differential mode delay

Abstract

We consider the problem of expressing the index of the refraction profile of a graded-index fibre or planar waveguide in terms of the results of differential mode delay measurements. We develop a perturbative solution to this problem within the context of geometrical optics by assuming that only meridional rays contribute experimentally.
