On the stability of neutron matter calculations

  • Published:
Zeitschrift für Physik A Hadrons and nuclei

Abstract

The problem of the stability of usual Hartree-Fock calculations of neutron matter with effective two-body interactions is investigated by using the second order variational equations. Sufficient conditions for instability are derived, which can be checked easily for a given effective potential. Numerical calculations are performed and neutron matter is found to be unstable against density fluctuations.
