Abstract
The energy shifts in the particle energy due theγ-recoil of an excited state decaying in flight are discussed. Formulae are derived which allow the extraction of spin populations of the decaying state from the line shape in the particle spectrum. Various effects due to kinematics and non-isotropic differential cross section are considered. In most cases a simple extraction of the alignment of nuclear states is possible from a fit to the line shape.
