Summary
The internal cellular organization and development of the dikaryotic fruit-body primordium (0.2 mm–1.0 mm) of Coprinus lagopus has been microscopically defined by the following stage: Stage I. Lattice formation. Stage II. Up-growth of aerial cells specifically from lattices followed by a general increase in cell density. Stage III. Regional cell growth and tissue organization. Stage IV. Development with a hyphal aggregation, in association with a clearly defined mushroom, of cells with distinct morphology and staining properties. Increasing organization and complexity of the primordium was associated with distinct changes in the morphology and staining properties of differentiating cells. Further specialization was found in the intracellular localization of polysaccharide during Stage IV of development.
