Summary
-
1.
Fraction Fa of crude substance P (SP), made from brain and gut, causes, in contrast to the SP peptide Fb, a relaxation of the isolated rat duodenum. Fraction Fa is therefore not a suitable SP standard preparation.
-
2.
By means of sephadex gel filtration, a relaxing component can be separated from the contracting Fa peptide.
-
3.
The relaxing Fa component is acidic, but is neither a peptide nor prostaglandinF 2α.
-
4.
Purified Fa material from brain is recommended as SP standard preparation.
