Summary
Wax esters ofAspergillus flavus ink (DU/KR 79-D) contained palmitic acid, oleic acid and oleyl alcohol as the major components. Maximum incorporation of labelled (1—14C)-acetate into wax esters was observed on the second day of growth (about 19%), while in aflatoxins it was observed on the tenth day, when incorporation into wax esters had decreased considerably. The wax ester hydrolysate contained precursors of aflatoxin B1. One ninth of the radioactivity in aflatoxin was shown to be due to oleic acid. It is postulated that the fungus metabolises wax esters into aflatoxins.
