Summary
Small cytoplasmic granules, which have been found in various keratinizing epithelia and called the membrane-coating granules or keratinosomes, were found to be amenable to phospholipase C digestion. Granules discharged into the intercellular spaces could also be digested with phospholipase C. Since it is believed that phospholipids are part of the intercellular cement not only in the skin but in other tightly junctioned epithelia, the name “cement granule” or “cementsome” was proposed for these granules.
