Summary
Sera collected from patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) were titrated for antibodies (IgM, IgG) against Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV) specific antigens (Viral Casid Antigen, Early Antigen). In contrast to patients with other head and neck tumors, NPC-patients showed significantly high anti-EBV titers of IgG. These EBV related antibody patterns seemed to be changed in the course of the disease and during therapy.
Furthermore, the presence of Epstein-Barr-Virus-associated Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) was demonstrated in touch smear preparations of fresh biopsies of NPC.
Our results emphasize the importance of the serologic studies and the demonstration of EBNA in fresh biopsies for the exact diagnosis of NPC.
