Summary
Distribution experiments using 57Co-bleomycin and therapeutic experiments with non-labelled bleomycin were carried out in strain two guinea pigs with 7 day old intradermally growing line ten tumors which already showed signs of lymphogenous metastasis. Labeled and non-labeled bleomycin was applied i.v. (aqueous solution) and intratumorally (aqueous solution, oil suspension, oil emulsion). Intratumoral application of bleomycin emulsion showed in comparison to all other tested variants the highest activities in the tumor and in the draining lymph nodes and the best therapeutic results. On the basis of these experimental findings a clinical study was started. Patients with inoperable squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck were treated by intralesional application of bleomycin emulsion. Under this type of therapy partial and complete tumor remission could be observed.
