Male and female meiosis in grasshoppers II. Chorthippus brunneus

Abstract

The frequencies and distribution patterns of chiasmata in the autosomal bivalents of Chorthippus brunneus are very similar in male and female meiosis. The mean cell chiasma frequency of oocytes is however significantly higher than that of spermatocytes, but this difference is almost certainly due to the incremental effect of the X bivalent on the chiasma frequencies of oocytes. The implications of these findings in terms of chiasma control are briefly discussed.
