Summary

Malignant degeneration and a tendency towards complications emphasize the importance of benign tumors comprising 5 per cent of all gastrointestinal neoplasms. Epithelial lesions are present in 88 per cent of two comparable clinical and autopsy groups of 323 cases each. Tumors appear most frequently in stomach (19%), colon (12%), and rectum (63%). Radical surgery is required in cases of malignant degeneration only if proved by frozen section. In all other instances local tumor removal, particularly of pedunculated polyps, is sufficient.
