Summary
The fine structure of the wall of the rudimentary rear chamber in the swimbladder of the pond-loach was studied. The morphological features of a majority of the cells, as well as the presence of micro-rete mirabile, suggest that epithelial components in the wall of this organ represent a structural and functional equivalent of the gas gland.
