Search for muon neutrino and antineutrino oscillations in the mass range 15<Δm 2<1,000 eV2/c4

Abstract

A search for inclusive muon-neutrino (v µ) and muon-antineutrino\((\bar v_\mu )\) oscillations has been performed in the Fermilab narrow band neutrino beam using two detectors running simultanously at two distances from the neutrino source. The data show no evidence for either neutrino or antineutrino oscillations and rule out oscillations ofv µ or\(\bar v_\mu \) into any other single type of neutrino for 15<Δm 2<1,000 eV2/c4 and sin2(2θ)>0.02–0.40.

  9. We used a Monte Carlo simulation of our experiment to determine that for the 15 data points, oscillations are excluded for (χ 2-χ 2min )>4.6. The minimumχ 2 for the 15v μ dataχ 2min , is 9.0 for Δm 2=1,252eV2/c4 and sin2(2θ)=0.55

  10. For the\(3\bar v_\mu \) data points, oscillations are excluded for (χ 2-χ 2min )>5.2. The minimumχ 2 for the\(\bar v_\mu \) dataχ 2min , is 0.23 for Δm 2=132eV2/c4 and sin2(2θ)=0.16

  11. The Pearsonχ 2 test excludes oscillations hypotheses withχ 2>22.3, and 6.25 for the 15v µ and\(3\bar v_\mu \) data points, respectively

  12. For the 18v µ and\(3\bar v_\mu \) points, oscillations are excluded for (χ 2-χ 2min )>4.3. The minimumχ 2 for the combinedv µ,\(3\bar v_\mu \) dataχ 2>22.3, is 12.5, for 1,252eV2/c4 and sin2(2θ)=0.61
