Abstract

A capillary assay was employed to quantify chemotactic responses in the chemoautotrophic bacterium,Thiobacillus thioparus. NH4Cl, KNO3, and Na2S2O3 were strong attractants. The minimum concentration of each of these inorganic chemicals needed to elicit an observable response was approximately 10−4 M.T. thioparus did not respond to carbohydrates or amino acids.
