Summary
A procedure is described for determining the total contents of reserpine and rescinnamine inRauwolfia. It is based on the yellowish-green color produced by both alkaloids on treatment with sodium nitrite and sulfuric acid. Spectral studies have established the identity of the colored species which exhibit maximum absorption at 385 nm. The latter is not produced by deserpidine.
