Summary
An interpretation of the melting point data has been proposed for polyethylene crystals by taking into account the dependency of the equilibrium melting temperature on molecular length and the effect of the surface energy of the crystal. A particular attention has been paid to the effect the molecular conformations in the crystals (i. e. the folded chain and the fully extended chain) might have on the observed melting temperature. Analysis of existing data has shown that the surface energy effect is much bigger for the folded conformation than that for the fully extended conformation and that the equilibrium melting temperature depends fairly strongly upon molecular weight. The results have also suggested that in the case of the single crystals grown from solution kinetic factors may govern the way crystals are formed even for low molecular weight fractions. In this connection, the possibility of the fully extended chain conformation in the crystals has been discussed from the kinetic viewpoint comparing crystallization from solution with that from melt.
