Summary
An equation for pseudoplastic surface viscosity was deduced to explain the structures and properties of polypeptide monolayers. In deduction of the equation, it was assumed that the surface viscosity of polymers is related to the energy loss due to the flow of twodimensional aggregates “rafts” and the shear rate dependence of the surface viscosity is attributed to the variation in the size of two-dimensional aggregates in monolayers.
The surface viscosityη at a shear rateD is expressed as,
where,α is a parameter related to the contributions to surface viscosities of raft-to-raft contact and raft-towater interaction,β is a parameter showing the velocity of rupture of raft structures due to the shearing force andη 0 andη ∞ are the limiting surface viscosities observed at zero and an infinite rates of shear, respectively.
It is possible to determine the size and rigidity of the two-dimensional aggregate in monolayers using this equation.
