Abstract

Negative ions were produced by impact of either highly excited krypton Rydberg atoms or slow electrons, ≈ 2.5 eV, on the neutral clusters of CCl4 formed in supersonic nozzle expansion. Negative cluster ions, (CCl4)nCl (0≤n≤9) and (CCl4)n (1 ≤n≤ 10), were detected by mass spectrometry; (CCl4)nCl2 and (CCl4)nCCl3 (0≤n≤9) were also observed by electron impact. An estimation of the excess energy generated by the formation of (CCl4)nCl by Rydberg atom impact indicates that the neutral precursor of (CCl4)nCl is (CCl4)n+1. In contrast, evaporation of several CCl4 units from a precursor cluster ion is expected in the formation of (CCl4)n.
