Abstract

A new binucleating ligand, 1,4-diamino-2-butanol (Hdbl), has been synthesized. Its copper(II) complexes, Cu(dbl)ClO4·14H2O and Cu(dbl)Cl·12H2O are stable in aqueous solution, keeping the binuclear structure. The measurements of magnetic susceptibilities over the temperature range (300 ∼ 80 K) have revealed that the perchlorate complex is binuclear (μeff = 1.24, 2J = -336 cm−1) in the solid state, but the chloride complex assumes a tetranulear cubane structure formed by weakly-linked two binuclear units, (μeff = 1.77, θ = -23.6 K).

Single crystals of 3 suitable for X-ray diffraction were obtained from the filtrate of the reaction mixture upon standing in air for several days. A solution of H3salbutO [39] (0.128 g, 0.408 mmol) in 10 mL of MeOH was added dropwise to a mixture of Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O (0.306 g 0.825 mmol) and imidazol (0.028 g, 0.413 mmol) in MeOH (25 mL). The pH of the mixture was raised to 11 upon addition of KOH in methanol/H2O.
