Abstract

Iso-polymolybdates and protonated species with the general formula HaMonObz were extracted from aqueous acid solutions by tri-n-octylamine hydrochloride in chloroform. The ratio n:z (the R value) was determined by chemical analysis, and vapour pressure lowering studies on the organic phase allowed direct calculation of n and z. Continuous polymerization in the pH range 1–5 was observed with ions of n = 6 and 10 persisting through the pH ranges 4–5 and 2–2·5, respectively. Two possible schemes for the formation of 6-ions and the possible conversion of these to 7-, 8- and 10-ions are discussed.
