Abstract

The widths and shifts of Mg+, Ca+, Sr+ and Ba+ lines broadened by electron and ion Stark effects have been measured in an argon welding type plasma. The electron density is about 1.3×1017 cm-3 and the temperature is about 13,000°K. Special care was taken to avoid self-absorption of resonance lines. Injection of alkaline earth elements into the cold region of the plasma edge permitted reliable measurements of the signs of line-shifts. Experimental results are compared with semi-classical theories and a new-classical computation of Sahal-Bréchot in which resonances of elastic cross sections are taken into account. Good agreement is observed between experiment and the later calculations.

The ionic contribution is much smaller than those of electrons. For the first method, we used the semi-classical perturbation (SCP) approach of Sahal-Bréchot (1969a), Sahal-Bréchot (1969b), Sahal-Bréchot (1974), Fleurier et al. (1977), Sahal-Bréchot et al. (2014) and Sahal-Bréchot (2021). For the second method, we used the modified semi-empirical (MSE) approach by Dimitrijević and Konjević (1980).

We neglected the self-absorption of the line, following the recommendations by Aragón and Aguilera [39] for Fe-Si samples containing 40% iron vs 15.5% of iron in our nodule. Stark width of Sr II 407.77 nm was assumed to be equal to 30 ± 3 pm for Ne = 1017 cm−3 and T = 13,000 K [40]. Since the content of strontium in soils and ores did not exceed 300 ppm, we neglected the line self-absorption.
