Abstract

A method is described for rapidly obtaining the rotational temperature from the spontaneous rotational Raman spectra of polyatomic symmetric top molecules in the gas phase. The method utilizes the odd-numbered R-branch lines in order to eliminate the complication resulting from S-branch interference. The temperature dependence is then approximated over the range of interest by a two-parameter expression of the same form used for the diatomic case. This approach is applied to NH3 gas flowing in a chemical vapor deposition cell.
