Abstract

Adiabatic flow of He II has been studied up to a net mass flow velocity v ⋍ 100 cm/s through a capillary of i.d. 0.2 mm and length 50 cm, in a wide temperature range 1.3-≈0.8 K. In order to reproduce the temperature distribution along the capillary within the framework of two-fluid hydrodynamics, we find a new-type mutual friction force FsnL0(v)⋅(vsvn) where the steady state vortex line density L0 is not a function of the relative velocity vsvn but a function of the net mass flow velocity v, which is almost equal to vs in the temperature region investigated. Further L0 has a very characteristic behavior as a function of v.
