Abstract

The structure of multiply-twinned particles of gold has been studied using high resolution lattice imaging with a transmission electron microscope. Icosahedra and decahedra with sizes of about 10 nm were found to contain dislocations. In the smaller particles nonuniform deformation was observed. The presence of defects confirmed that the particle structure was face-centered cubic.
