Abstract

A novel electro-absorption modulator is proposed. The modulation of light in this device is performed in an electrically-addressed waveguide in which almost total reflection of light at the waveguide interfaces is achieved at a small angle of refraction. The coupling of light into the waveguide is achieved through a low-finesse Fabry-Pérot cavity operating off-axis. The overall performance of the device is quantified and compared to the waveguide and asymmetric Fabry-Pérot modulators.
