Abstract

We derive an expression for the spectral distribution and the polarization of the intensity of near-resonant radiation scattered from atoms in a perturber gas. The effects of the degeneracy of the levels and of the interference between different levels are accounted for. In the case of far-wing irradiation the scattered spectrum separates in a Rayleigh or a Raman peak, and a series of fluorescence peaks. We study the variation of the polarization and the strength of these various peaks as a function of the incident frequency and of the perturber density.
