Abstract

At T = 0 field induced phase transitions in antiferromagnets are accompanied with the sudden appearance of a macroscopic magnetization. The requirements that the spin arrangement of the field induced phase be describable by a magnetic space group which allows a macroscopic magnetization and be derivable from a subgroup of the crystallographic group, strongly limits the permitted magnetic space groups of such phases. The utility of this idea is demonstrated by examples of field induced phases in CoCl2 · 2H2O, LiCuCl3 · 2H2O, MnCl2 · 4H2O, and KMnCl3 · 2H2O.
