Abstract

According to our measurements, the long lifetime τ2 of positrons in water shows a sudden transition at about 4°C. The transition in the peak-rate of angular correlation of annihilation photons is situated at 0°C.

For sample (ii), which was exposed to a high humidity atmosphere overnight, we see an additional lifetime appear at 1 ns. Previous measurements find that a lifetime component of ≈ 1.6 ns corresponds to annihilation on water molecules [12–14]. Thus the 1 ns is unlikely to be due to direct contributions to the lifetime spectrum from the water.
