Fission by a radiationless transition in the μ mesonic atom 239Pu

Abstract

The time distribution of fission in the μ-mesonic atom 239Pu was measured. It was found that the ratio prompt fissions/fissions by μ-capture is equal to 0.43 ± 0.09. This value indicates a radiationless transition contribution by an order of magnitude greater than in uranium and thorium.
