Observation of s-d coherence for the n=4 level of hydrogen excited by passage of protons through gas targets

Abstract

We have observed zero-field quantum beats, for the Hβ transition, in gas-excited hydrogen using a short gas cell of He and Ar. The measurements have shown evidence for an s-d coherence amplitude as important as the one obtained with a carbon foil target.
