Observation of s-d coherence for the n=4 level of hydrogen excited by passage of protons through gas targets

Abstract

We have observed zero-field quantum beats, for the H_β transition, in gas-excited hydrogen using a short gas cell of He and Ar. The measurements have shown evidence for an s-d coherence amplitude as important as the one obtained with a carbon foil target.

Energy dependence of the relative excitation functions of Li I core-excited levels after beam-foil excitation

A detailed study of beam-foil excitation functions of levels in the individual level schemes of Li⁻, Li I, Li II and Li III has been undertaken in the wavelength region 200–650 nm at incident beam energies between 49 and 405 keV. We found that the relative excitation functions within a given level scheme are of similar shape, whereas the shapes of excitation functions belonging to different level schemes clearly differ. We also observed a clear difference between the relative excitation functions of Li I^2∗ states of different electronic cores, 1s2snl and 1s2pnl, respectively. The maxima of these latter excitation functions both lie in between the maxi the Li I and Li II excitation functions, with the maximum of the Li I^2∗ 1s2snl excitation function situated closer to the Li I maximum. The relative excitation function of the only known excited level in Li⁻ was found to be very similar to that of the Li I^2∗ 1s2snl levels.
Coherent excitation in electron capture collisions

We have calculated the coherent excitation cross sections induced in electron capture collisions with fast impinging ions, within the eikonal approximation taken in its prior form. The cross sections and components ϱ₀^k(l₁, l₂) of the irreducible tensor associated with the l₁, l₂ density matrix elements, are given in a closed analytical form, which yields directly the total intensity and the polarization. This result generalizes the one obtained by F.T. Chan and J. Eichler (Phys. Rev. A20 (1979) 1811) for electron capture into arbitrary nl shells. The sub-shell cross section values agree with those calculated within the Born approximation. The polarization — about 20% — is higher than that obtained in close coupling methods (i.e. H.G. Morrison and U. Opik, J. Phys. B11 (1978) 473). It is also higher than that measured in electron capture experiments with thin gas-cells.
