Abstract

The local electronic structure of the high-T_c superconductors YBa₂Cu₃O_7−δ and Nd_2−xCe_xCuO_4−δ is probed by soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cu single bond L_II,III, OK, CeM_IV,V, and NdM_IV,V thresholds. The near-edge structures provide information on the partial unoccupied density of states above E_F as well as on valency and covalency of the constituent elements.

Electron energy-loss and x-ray absorption spectroscopy of cuprate superconductors and related compounds

O1s and Cu2p absorption edges of cuprate high-T_c superconductors (HTSC) and related compounds measured by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) are reviewed. Since these edges are related to the site-selective unoccupied density of states, they provide important information on the normal-state electronic structure of HTSCs. In particular they can determine the character of the charge carriers of both the p- and n-type doped cuprates and they indicate that correlation effects are important in these systems. Orientation dependent EELS and polarization dependent XAS measurements on cuprate single crystals provide information on the symmetry of the hole states in the CuO₂ planes and block layers of the HTSCs. The results impose strong constraints on theories of high-T_c superconductivity which are based on charge carriers in out-of-plane orbitals.
Processing and Ce-doping dependence of Nd<inf>2-x</inf>Ce<inf>x</inf>CuO<inf>4-δ</inf> core level spectra

We present investigations of the processing and doping dependence of the Cu 2p- and Nd 3d-core level spectra of Nd_2−xCe_xCuO_4−δ. The sintering process seems to enhance the overlap between Cu 3d- and O 2p-orbitals in the CuO- layers, whereas the reducing procedure as well as Ce-doping introduce electrons with Cu 3d-character into the T'-structure. Nd 3d-spectra show a decreasing mean overlap of Nd-orbitals with the neighbouring oxygen atoms as a result of both the sintering and reducing processes, whereas hybridizations is enhanced with increasing Ce-content of the samples. This behaviour can be explained by the removal of oxygen from the NdO-layers of Nd_2−xCe_xCuO_4−δ during the sintering and reducing procedures.
