Abstract

The production of 82Sr from proton irradiation of natural RbCl targets has been investigated. Protons of 84-51 MeV from the Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer have been used to prepare up to 24.2 GBq of 82Sr per target. Chemical isolation of Sr was accomplished with ion exchange on Chelex 100 with an average recovery of 83%. At shipment the 83Sr/82Sr ratio was <0.05 and the 85Sr/82Sr ratio was <0.75.

It provides significantly better precision compared to 201Tl (Go et al., 1990) and presents less radiation exposure for patients compared to 99mTc scan (Yoshinaga et al., 2010). Many studies have also been performed on the elution system and the optimized chemical separation (Grant et al., 1975; Yano et al., 1977; Kensett et al., 1987; Mausner et al., 1987; Saha et al., 1990; Cackette et al., 1993; Bilewicz et al., 2005; Klein et al., 2007; Yoshinaga et al., 2010). The method of choice for 82Sr/82gRb generator production is the (p,4n) reaction on 85Rb which benefits from high natural abundance.

In order to fulfil the specifications (Phillips et al., 2000), the solution must pass two times in 1 g of Chelex-100 resin to obtain the final strontium solution within specifications. As compared to previous studies (Mausner et al., 1987), it has been found that in our conditions, a Chelex-100 column is sufficient and no additional column is necessary. No significant contaminations of stable elements like zinc, chromium, manganese, etc. is detected in the final solution.

Ironically, the requirement for the production of 82Sr is similar to that of the generator requirements, that is, for the Sr to be retained by the resin and the Rb to be easily eluted. As a result, many productions have been reported using Chelex 100 chelating resin (Qaim et al., 2007; Phillips et al., 2000; Mausner et al., 1987; Cackette et al. 1993). Sylvester et al. (2006) recently reported a separation method of 82Sr from its target material using sodium nonatitanate resin, following their report of using the same material as resin for a 82Sr/82Rb generator.
