Abstract

This paper describes efficiency measurements of multiwire gas proportional counters in a 1 GeV/c particle beam. Results are presented as a function of the location of the particle traversal relative to the wires. Timing spectra relative to coincident scintillation counters show that 99.5% efficiency can be achieved throughout the sensitive area with a full width time resolution of 60 ns. Counter construction is outlined, and a new integrated circuit amplifier-discriminator is presented.
