Abstract

A moving tape apparatus is described which allows the measurement of β half-lives in the region of 0.3 s to 10 min of neutron deficient isotopes produced by high energy particle accelerators. The recoiling reaction products are stopped in a tape behind the target. The tape moves with a preselected, constant velocity through a shielding to two Ge(Li) detectors. Half-lives are determined from fits of tape velocity dependent γ-ray intensities. The performance of the apparatus was tested by measuring γ-ray spectra from 181Ta(α,xn)185−xRe reaction products at Eα = 133 MeV. The results for the isotopes 174Re[(2.4±0.15) min], 175Re[(4.6±0.4) min], 176Re[(5.2±0.4) min] and180Re[(2.6±0.2) min] are compared with the literature.
