A liquid helium polarimeter for fast neutrons, I. Instrumentation

Abstract

A liquid helium polarimeter for the measurement of neutron polarization in the 2 to 20 MeV energy range is described. A neutron time-of-flight technique is employed to resolve neutrons of different energy groups. For a 2 meter flight path, the energy resolution is between 6% and 7% for polarization measurements. The polarimeter operation has been checked with the D(d,n)3He reaction. Performance characteristics observed in 28Si(d,n)29P and 40Ca(d,n)41Sc experiments are reported. Practical operation is possible for reaction cross-section as low as 1 mb/sr.
