Abstract

A “massless” particle detector has been developed. It is a multiwire counter, in which all counting wires are connected to the same preamplifier. It has a low stopping power and a good efficiency. Counters of this kind can be made with large sensitive areas for a fairly low price. They are useful as trigger or hodoscope counters in particular for the detection of low energy particles. Measuring the primary ionisation in the counter as a function of particle momentum or residual range yields information helpful for particle separation.
