A movable dynode electron multiplier for the detection of radioactive ions in an on-line mass spectrometer

Abstract

It is shown that an aluminized mylar tape may be used as the first dynode (ion to electron converter) of an electron multiplier. When the tape is moved, a clean converter surface is exposed to the incident beam, which avoids the strong source of background consisting in implanted radioactive atoms.
